This history of the Beansappers (Gainor’s Tavern) building dates back to 1877 when Mackville was just starting out. It was built by an Irish immigrant named Michael Gainor and it was the towns
first Post Office, general store, tavern, blacksmith shop & had an attached living quarters when the Gainor family lived.
Michael Gainor retired and moved to Appleton where he purchased rental property houses, and he leased Gainor’s Tavern to Phillip Barry. Unfortunately the building burned and Michael sold his
properties in Appleton and moved back to Mackville to rebuild and run his beloved Tavern/General Store.
When Michael finally retired for the second time, he sold the business to his son Joe Gainor and his wife. Joe and Katheren continued to run it until they in turn retired and sold it to their nephew
Floyd Reiland and his wife Frances “Babe” Reiland.
The business was re-branded “Floyd and Babes” with a dance hall up stairs and a tent out back during the summer for more room for events.
Mrs. Reiland became terminally ill and took her life at home in 1970, Folyd continued to run the business until his passing in 1984.
The building was placed in a trust and their children leased the building out.
In 1987, while the building was “Fort Mackville” a fire broke out in the living quarters in the morning hours killing the three children who were trapped in their bed room at the time.
After this tragedy, the living quarters was torn down and the property sold in 1993 for the first time outside of the family to what is now Beansnappers.
